Mixed Breeds ~Vs~ Pure Breeds
Q. I am thinking of getting a dog but I can't decide between getting one from a shelter or a breeder. Any thoughts or suggestions?
A. Unless your heart is set on a specific type of breed for a specific reason you should go to your local shelter. Their is a big misconception about mixed breed shelter dogs, too many people think that they are not as "good" as expensive pure breeds however this is not the case. Mixed breeds often are less likely to accquire genetic disorders then pure breeds. The reason for this is that they are more genetically diverse and therefore it is unlikely that the parents both had the same genetic defect. Not to mention that shelter dogs are a lot less expensive then going through a breeder. Some people are weary of getting a shelter dog because of the potential for the dog to have behavioral problems. However, all respectable shelters make sure that each dog goes through a series socialization/behavioral exercises to make sure that he or she would make a great pet!
